Erymex (Erythromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic with bacteriostatic action. It acts by inhibition of protein synthesis by binding 50s ribosomal subunit of susceptible organisms which interferes with bacterial growth & multiplication. It is active against many gram-positive bacteria, some gram-negative bacteria and against mycoplasma and chlamydia

Erymex is indicated for the prophylaxis & treatment of the following clinical conditions caused by Erythromycin sensitive microorganisms: ¿ Upper respiratory tract infection: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, secondary infection in cold and influenza. ¿ Lower respiratory tract infection: Tracheitis, acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia (Lobar pneumonia, broncho-pneumonia, primary atypical pneumonia), whooping cough, legionnaries disease. ¿ Ear & oral infection: Otitis media & otitis externa, mastoiditis, gingivitis, Vincents angina. Skin & soft tissue infection: Acne vulgaris, erythrasama, boils and carbuncles, impetigo, abscesses, cellulitis. ¿ Gastro-intestinal infection: Cholecystitis, Staphylococcal enterocolitis. Veneral infection: Urethritis, syphillis, lymphogranuloma venereum. ¿ Other infection: Osteomyelitis, diphtheria, rheumatic fever, whooping cough.

Adult & children over 8 years: 500 mg twice daily. This may be increased up to 4 gm according to the severity of the infection. Children aged 2-8 years: 30-50 mg/kg/day divided in divided doses.

It is contraindicated to the patient who has a history of previous hypersensitivity reaction to the drug.

Caution should be taken when administering it to patients with liver dysfunction or who are currently receiving potentially hepatotoxic drugs.

Erythromycin & its salts are well tolerated & serious side effects are rare. Nausea, gastrointestinal disturbance and allergy may occur.

The drug is considered as safer antibiotics. Clinical and laboratory studies have been shown no evidence of teratogenicity or toxicity.

Recent data from studies of erythromycin reveals that its use in patients who are receiving high dosage of theophylline may be associated with an increase of serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity. In such cases this dose of theophylline should be reduced

In case of overdosage, Erythromycin should be discontinued. Overdosage should be handled with the prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug and all other appropriate measures should be instituted. Erythromycin is not removed by peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis

Store in cool and dry place, protect from light. Keep the products out of the reach of children.
