CLARITHROMYCIN USP

CLARITH 500 MG 500 MG 10 S TABLET

Clarith Tablet: Each film coated tablet contains Clarithromycin USP 500 mg. Clarith Powder for Suspension: Each 5 ml suspension contains Clarithromycin USP 125 mg.

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting microsomal protein synthesis by binding to the 50s subunit of the bacterial ribosome. Clarithromycin is active against most gram-positive bacteria, some gram-negative bacteria including Chlamydia, Mycoplasma etc.

Clarithromycin is indicated for • LRTIs acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia • URTIs sinusitis and pharyngitis • Skin and soft tissue infections

Clarithromycin may be given with or without meals. Usual dose is 250 mg twice daily for 7 days. Dose may be increased to 500 mg twice daily if necessary in severe infections. A course is usually for 7 to 14 days. In patient with severe renal impairment, dosage may need to be halved to 250 mg once daily or 250 mg twice daily in severe infection or as directed by a registered physician. Children: The usual recommended daily dosage is 15 mg/kg in 2 divided doses for 10 days.

Hypersensitive to Clarithromycin, Erythromycin or any of the macrolide antibiotics.

Caution should be taken in patients with impaired hepatic and renal function.

Diarrhoea, nausea, abnormal taste, dyspepsia, abdominal pain/discomfort, headache etc.

Pregnancy Category C. Clarithromycin should not be used during pregnancy or lactation if possible.

The use of Clarithromycin who are receiving Theophylline may be associated with an increase of serum Theophylline concentrations. Concomitant administration of single dose of Clarithromycin and Carbamazepine has been shown to result in increased plasma concentration of Carbamazepine. Concomitant use of Clarithromycin with Cisapride, Pimozide or Terfenadine is contraindicated.

Adverse reactions accompanying overdose should be treated by the prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug and supportive measures. As with other macrolides, Clarithromycin serum levels are not expected to be appreciably affected by haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.

Stored in a cool and dry place below 30°C. Keep away from light.

Clarith Tablets: Each box contains 10 tablets in AIu-AIu blister pack. Clarith Powder for Suspension: Each bottle contains dry powder for 70 ml suspension with a spoon.
